Why First Terms of Service

These terms govern your use of the Why First browser extension, the Why First account, the Pro lifetime license and AI intent judgments.

The product

Why First is a browser extension that inserts a lightweight intent check-in before websites you choose. It is a self-help tool, not a medical, productivity, or security product. It does not guarantee any behavioral outcome.

Free version

The Free version is provided at no cost and covers up to five site rules, with intent check-ins, a fixed pause and local statistics. We may update or discontinue features with reasonable notice.

Accounts

• You need a Why First account to claim the 30 free AI intent judgments, and to buy Pro or more judgments. Using the extension itself needs no account.
• You are responsible for keeping your password safe and for activity under your account. Keep the email address on your account current; it is how an order is matched to you.
• We may suspend an account that is used for fraud, payment abuse, or to disrupt the service, and we will state the reason.
• You can ask us to delete your account at any time (see the privacy policy). Deleting the account ends the entitlements it holds; order records that tax and consumer law requires us to keep survive the deletion.

Pro lifetime license

• Pro is a one-time purchase that unlocks current and future Pro features on the browsers where you activate it.
• "Lifetime" means the lifetime of the product: as long as Why First is maintained, Pro features you paid for remain available to you without further payment.
• Our payment partner sells Pro as the merchant of record: it takes the payment, handles tax, issues the receipt, and its own refund policy applies during the applicable refund window. The order, the entitlement it grants and any AI intent judgments it includes are recorded in your Why First account, and you receive a license key.
• The license key is verified by our license service, which issues a signed credential the extension stores and verifies locally; the extension then works offline. While offline, that credential stays valid for a grace period — 60 days by default, configurable between 30 and 90 days. After the grace period expires, Pro features are suspended and the extension falls back to Free until the next successful check; your rules, statistics and reasons are not deleted. Keep your license key safe; it is your proof of purchase.
• A refund or chargeback reverses the entitlement the purchase granted. A revoked or refunded key stops working at the extension's next successful check.

AI intent judgments

• AI intent judgments are a prepaid count that pays for judgments run through Why First. They have no cash value, are not transferable, and do not expire while your account exists.
• A verified account receives 30 judgments once, at no cost. Consumption, the count included with Pro and the size of a top-up pack follow the pricing published on our pricing page: one judgment spends one.
• Refunding a judgment pack reverses the judgments that purchase granted, which may leave your balance negative. Ledger corrections are made by adding entries, never by editing past ones.
• AI judgments that run through your own provider or endpoint and your own API key spend no judgments.

Acceptable use

Do not misrepresent the extension, resell license keys or AI intent judgments, share one account as a way to resell access, or use the product to violate any law or the terms of the browser stores that distribute it.

No warranty

The extension is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind. Because your browsing data and extension data are stored locally on your device, you are responsible for your own backups (Settings provides a JSON export). The flows that leave your device are the Pro license requests (activation, background refresh and deactivation) and the optional AI reader you can switch on; both are described in the privacy policy. Cross-device sync of rules and settings is built but not offered in this release, so it carries no data today.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect or consequential damages, including lost time, lost data stored locally by the extension, or lost profits.

Changes

We may update these terms. Material changes will be noted in the extension's changelog and on this page with a new "Last updated" date.
